Heroes Of The Court And Sports

Posted on: July 16, 2008 2:11 am

Who are those great heroes that tug at our heart strings through gutty, gruelling and inspiring efforts on the court or in the sport?

Which athletes demonstrated class and grace and sportsmanship on the court or in the sport?

Is it Arthur Ashe or Willie Mays or Muhammad Ali, the horse, Secretariat or Chrissy Evert; perhaps Abibi Bikila, the great Ethiopian barefoot Olympian?

I would love to know your thoughts regarding those great athletes that exhibited great court or sports gestures or were involved in awe-inspiring events, not unlike the tremendous story of Texas Ranger outfielder, Josh Hamilton.

What is truly gut-wrenching or breathtaking about the courts and sports and the gestures of great athletes?

About Court Gestures
Please offer your take on the true heroes of the court or sport that have inspired you through gracious gestures of sportsmanship on that court or in that sport. What gave you goose bumps because that "real sports hero" rose above the game to applaud, assist or show concern toward his/her competitor. Is it the pitcher that cares or checks on the welfare of a batter he/she accidentally beaned? Is it the high school football teams that meet at midfield prior to the game to talk and have a bit of fun? Is it the basketball player who fouls a player hard on a driving layup, but catches that same player before they come crashing to the floor? Please add your inspirational hero/heroes. I enjoy a small business where we try to enthuse and esteem youngsters with these stories about the 'True Heroes' of sports. They are quite tremendous role models and few and far between. One of my favorite heroes of all time just happens to be a brave athlete from 'Hitler's Horrific Germany'. Jesse Owens, one of our greatest American heroes, had fouled on his first attempts to qualify for the finals of the '36 Berlin Olympics' Long Jump final. Lutz Long, a German long jumper himself, chose to lay a towel adjacent to Jesse's take off spot, thus assisting Jesse to qualify for the L.J. final where he copped the gold. Long layed the towel down even as Hitler watched from his 'throne' above.
